Abstract EN

This research shows us that civilizational expansion in Erbil is much required and inevitable because of the increase in population and also the research shows the negative effects of horizontal expansion on economy.

The problem that the research demonstrates is the negative economic effects of horizontal expansion in Erbil city and its impact on residence and services which have been submitted by Erbil Municipality in order to compare the costs and benefits between the horizontal and vertical expansion.

The conclusion of the research includes three main points, the first concerns residence (housing).

The second point is related to services such as (streets, electricity, water, sewage) The third point is concerned to agriculture which shows us that annually there is a loss of (568.4) donms of agricultural land caused by allocating those lands for constructing housing units.

The research also presents several proposals of which the most important is implementing a reorganizing plan that undertakes vertical expansion instead of horizontal expansion which prevails currently, as well as paying more attention to provide better streets, leaving adequate area for agricultural lands and protecting them from reduction or decrease, and finally working hard to improve rural areas generally in order to reduce immigration from rural are as to urban areas.
