Abstract EN

This paper examined the speech of Queen Elizabeth of Britain, which was televised in March 2020.

In her speech, the Queen talked to the people about consequences of Corona pandemic, appreciated their efforts, their capabilities in overcoming such consequences.

This speech was characterized by verbal expression accompanied by visual effects, such as pictures, sound and video.

This multimodal system helped in fulfilling various language functions and semiotic meaning.

Therefore, this paper analyzed the multimodal aspects of the visual and verbal features of the speech as well as their meanings and semiotic relations.

This was based on Kress and Van Leeuwen’s Visual Social Semiotics approach and Halliday’s Systemic Functional Theory.

The study started by reviewing the theoretical perspectives and the approved approaches.

Then, the study, introduced the Queen’s speech and its multimodal features.

Then, the the speech was analyzed in terms of verbal and visual aspects, with a focus on the ideational, personal and textual meanings of verbal aspects.

This was aligned with the visual aspects of the speech in term of representational interactional and compositional meaning.
