Abstract EN

The American dispensary which had been e'tablished in 1892 as a part of the American- Arabic missionary had provided so many medical services to the people of Basra, there was no hospital in Basra providing regular and effective treatment services to the people in Ottoman era.

The dispensary was developed into an integrated American hospital in Basra in 1911.

Medical services which provided by doctors and nurses working in the dispensary and American hospital has been neglected by historians Strikingly.

Arab historians focused on the religious and politi- cal aspects of the American Missionaries and tried to explain their failure to convert Muslims to ChriÅtianity and to warn against the types of Christianity missionaries and to indicate their danger to Islam and Muslims.

HiÅtorians did not care for the doctors worked in the dispensary and the hospital later, and the great services they introduced to people ofBasra and their contributions in the treatment of many ofthe diseases that were intractable at that time.

In the other side, American historians focused on the reasons for the failure of the religious missionaries in the Arab countries and inability to convert Muslims of Basra to Christianity.

They searched missionaries' efforts and how some tried to spread Christianity among Muslim patients.

Thus, no one of the hiÅtorians had ever documented the painstaking medical efforts made by American doctors in Basra under very harsh conditions in terms of the very hot climate, high humidity and the diseases they have suffered room and having been away from their homes for very long periods.

This paper, highlight the medical services provided by the American missionaries leaving aside their religious or political goals that led them to come to Basra, which was discussed by both the American and the Arab hiQorians.

To highlight the deep humanitarian aspects carried by most doctors when they came to Basra and mixed with the people, and this is what we will deal with here in.
