Abstract EN

Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the use of social media in higher education, which has led to a massive use of social networking sites such as facebook to create, share and exchange information through different student pages or groups.

This study presents a qualitative analysis of the interaction patterns of a closed group on the facebook site between the instructor of (Introduction to Education course) and the university students at a public university.

The data analysis focused on extrapolating the 777 posts of a closed group for a year.

The study found that the teacher relies on Facebook as a tool for communication with students rather than as an educational tool, meaning that Facebook is closer to an advertisement board to deliver the most important information with less effort and faster, less expensive time.

The interaction between teachers and students was positive, with 14 different patterns.

In light of the previous results, the researcher recommended training academics on how to employ facebook as a teaching tool, and making institutional changes to facilitate and encourage experimentation by faculty members who want to determine the effectiveness of social media tools for teaching.
