Abstract EN

Oman’s shipbuilding industry has undergone a number of stages and developments, since the Omani man’s interaction with the sea.

This shipbuilding industry was affected by the presence of the Portuguese during the end of the 15th and early 16th century.

From the design of the two Portuguese ships (Noua and Carvilla), Oman’s manufacturers from Sur city were able to manufacture Al- Ghanja ship, which was then used for distant navigation, reaching the borders of South Africa to the west, India and China in the east.

The ship is characterized by having a collection of floral and geometric motifs that were precisely carved, that can be used as an educational resource for art learners.

No studies or analysis have been done on these motifs due to the fact that the production of these types of ships was stopped.

Therefore this study aims to analyze the structural construction and study the formal solutions of these motifs, which can used to lead us to answer the following question: Is it possible to benefit from the motifs of the Al- Ghanja ship to make an innovative source of education for art learners?
