furthermore, evidence in the Koran and in traditional lore relating to the prophet, lend credence to the idea that certain passages in the Koran possess special intrinsic powers.

appropriated by a scholarly literature, the subject was elaborated in treatises on magic talismans in which passages from the Koran held pride of place.

what remains significant, however, is that instead of taking the wording of the text as it stood, it was subjected to transformational procedures commonly used in magic, thus transforming both its form and its meaning.
