Abstract.

this study aims to identify the role allocated to institutions and paths of cultural mediation as well as primary socialization circles in preserving and maintaining the pearl heritage among university youth in the United Arab Emirates.

To respond to this problematic, we relied on the quantitative approach using a questionnaire to collect data.

The snowball method was adopted in selecting the sample, which was directed primarily at the student community of the College of Sciences and Humanities at Ajman University.

On the theoretical level, the study focused on three basic concepts to frame the research problem, which are intangible heritage, cultural mediation, and intergenerational transmission.

The study found that the presence of the heritage of pearl fishing and trade within the cultural practices of the research sample is relatively weak, but it did not lose its symbolic value.

The study also concluded on the importance of educational institutions as a cultural mediator of the intangible cultural heritage.

Nevertheless, modern cultural media based mainly on audiovisual platforms emerged as an ideal medium for transmitting information about the pearl heritage to the younger generation.

The audiovisual documentary material published either on television or virtual platforms came on top of the interviewees’ preferences.
