Interest in scientific research began in Yemen in the fifties of the last century, through the establishment of two stations for agricultural research and extension, namely the code station, and another station in Lahj during British colonialism.

The first research center in Yemen was established in 1972, the Yemeni Studies and Research Center in Sana'a, followed by Establishment of the Cultural Research Center in Aden in 1975 AD, then the Center for Studies, Research and Educational Development in Sana'a, as well as the General Authority for Agricultural Research and Extension in Dhamar, and the Yemeni Research and Studies Center affiliated to the University of Aden, which was established in 1988.
