A field experiment was conducted to study effect of irrigation method and soil mulching on the growth characters of maize (Zea mays L.

) in the field of the College of Agriculture / University of Wasit located at a longitude 45° 50' 33.5"east and N 29° 36' 49.8" norths for the Autumn 2019.

The soil texture was sandy loam, with the aims is to study the effect of the two irrigation methods (basins and drip irrigation) and determine the preference through the growth characters of maize crop, and a comparison of different types of soil mulching (plants residue and industrial) and determine the best through the amounts of added irrigation water and the characters of crop growth.

The experiment was designed according to a randomized complete block design RCBD with three replications.

The seeds of maize cultivar Fajir were planted 20/7/2019 and harvested on 20/11/2019.

The results of the study showed that there were no significant differences between the two irrigation methods for plant height, leaf area, and 500 grain weight.

However, there were significant differences between the two irrigation methods for the grain yield (kg.

ha-1) as the treatment of basin irrigation was significantly superior to that of furrow irrigation, and it showed an average of 4712.5 kg.

ha-1, while the furrow irrigation recorded an average of 4007.0 kg.

ha-1.

The results showed that there were sig-nificant differences in the average plant height for the mulching treatments, as the highest average was 163.7 cm for straw mulching, while the nylon mulching treatment gave the lowest average of 142.4 cm.

It also showed that there are significant differences in the effect of mulching on the leaf area, where the highest average was 5214 cm2 for straw mulching, while the lowest average was for the treatment of mulching with nylon.

The study also showed that there were significant differences between the mulching treatments, as straw treatment gave the highest average for the yield as well as for the weight of 500 grains, which reached 5245.0 kg.

ha-1 for the yield and 167.1 gm for 500 grains.
