Abstract EN

The study aims to explore the teaching practices needed to construct mathematical knowledge among primary stage students in the light of the international experiments (Japan and Singapore).

The qualitative field approach (survey design) was used on the sample of the study consisting of 6 teachers of mathematics in the primary stage in each country.

Results of the open classroom observations and unstructured interviews with the sample of the study showed that the teaching style used in Japan is the approach of problem solving according to its stages: Introducing a life problem, developing the solution, progress through discussion, summarizing knowledge as reflected on practice.

While the teaching pattern used in the study sample in Singapore was direct instruction.

Results, also, showed that both countries focus in their teaching practices on building conceptual knowledge first and then adopting procedural knowledge, supported by the nature of the mathematical content, which presents fewer concepts with deeper and greater concentration.

The study, also, showed more interest of the two countries' teachers in using representations to build mathematical concepts and deep gradation to form them in the minds of their students, where the presentation begins with the gradual from meaningful representation and transition to graphic representation access to the abstract representation of the concept and its symbolic expressions to make mathematics meaningful for their students.
