Categorization is an important mechanism in the acquisition and organization of concepts, and the acquisition of the names that designate them.

Prototype theory is considered one of the convincing explanations of the categorization process.

This study aims to extract the prototype or prototypical exemplars that are most representative of the category, in a sample of Algerian students, for use in conveying the meaning of category names in a dictionary for learners.
