Abstract EN

Objective: This study examined the negative effects of using social networks (Facebook) on society and the family.

Method: The study adopted the descriptive analytical approach with a sample consisting of (238) members of the Palestinian society who use social networks (Facebook).

The participants were selected purposively according to their availability utilizing the rolling snowball method.

An online questionnaire was distributed to collect data.

Results: The results concluded that the overall degree of negative effects of social networks (Facebook) on society was “high”, and the criterion “Acquiring psychological tendencies and inappropriate behavior among members of society” got the highest level.

In addition, the overall degree of negative effects of social networks (Facebook) on the family was also high while the criterion “It decreases the activity of family members and results in poor performance of their duties” got the highest level.

Results showed that there are no statistically significant differences between the views of the members of the sample about the degree of negative effects of social networks (Facebook) on society and the family due to the variables of gender, nature of work, age, marital status, place of residence, educational qualification, and average daily use of Facebook.

Conclusion: It is undoubtedly that using social networks (Facebook) has undeniable advantages and benefits.

Nevertheless, there are some negative effects that might negatively affect the society and the family.

Thus, it is necessary to carefully investigate and identify these possible risks so as to take the necessary measures to prevent or limit the impact of these risks.
