Abstract EN

The study presents a general background on information programmes and policies in selected countries including Canada, Japan, United States and United Kingdom.

For each of these countries the national efforts to develop information policies were discussed.

The second part of the study was devoted to the Arab countries showing the problems faced by information systems development.

A detailed review of situation in Iraq was presented in addition to the state of development in Egypt, Jordan and Tunisia.

A conclusion on the experience of non-Arab Countries was presented sharing that national libraries take the lead role in this regard, and that such systems are attached to the highest executive authority in the country, in addition to allocation of budget, trend towards centralization, use of international efforts, use of information technology and translation of scientific literature.

As for the experience from the Arab Countries, the study concluded that there is desire to develop such systems, with lack of awareness of have to go about it and lack of clear vision of what policies to develop as a result of no standarized methods under utilization of international efforts in this regard, use of information technology with no harmonization, the published literature on the subject is still Iggs behind that information services are not well developed.
