Abstract EN

This paper represents a project for an encyclopedic computerized Arabic dictionary for nonspeakers of Arabic.

It is intended to help foreign learners in understanding the various linguistic systems (phonological, morphological, syntactic......etc) of the Arabic language.

It is also meant as an aid in appreciating Arab culture and acquiring linguistic and communicative competence which would enable learners to effectively use Arabic through the communicative skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

The paper is divided into three sections: Section one: from a paper dictionary to a computerized one.

This chapter highlights differences between a dictionary intended for native speakers of Arabic and that which is intended for non-speakers of Arabic, in addition to the differences between a paper dictionary and a computerized one.

Section two: The description of the suggested dictionary.

This chapter contains the aims of the dictionary, the target audience, its organization, language, supporting programs and the stages of its preparation.

Section three: The structure and function of the dictionary.

This chapter illustrates, in detail, the various parts of the dictionary including introduction, general information, and supporting dictionaries an programs.
