Abstract EN

This study aims at clarifying naming and functions of preventive nun (- Wiqaya nun) phenomenon as presented in Arabic language anti old Arab linguistic studies.

In order to accomplish its main aim, the study reviews the viewpoints of old Arab grammarians, who paid a few attention to this Morpho-plionological phenomenon.

It, also, investigates the phenomenon phonological structure through out referring to textual evidences, that adapted by old Arab grammarians, and examples, that are realized in Arabic.

As a sequence, it has been observed that old grammarians explanation of preventive nun occurrence centered on verb regular formation case, in term of remaining marks of the inflected and uninflected verbs, precisely when these verbs are suffixed with (i:) as personal pronoun.

The study also shows, among its other conclusions, that, preventive nun ,inay, occurs in different word classes, including verb, noun, preposition.

In addition to that, it shows other functions of preventive nun, namely its role and impact on Arabic syllable formation, as it suffixed to prevent vowels consecution within the same syllable on one hand, and to prevent forming discarded syllables in phonological Arabic system (i.e $w $) on the other hand.
