Abstract EN

This Study deals with the religious Jobs in Jerusalem during Egyption rule 1831-1840 based on the City’s Religious Court Archives, due to the documentary importance of these Archives in historical Studies and research and the valuable quality of information these Sources provide.

The Study has shown two type؛ of religious jobs .

The first relates to the Dome of the Rock Mosque and the Aqsa Mosque, and includes serving in the Dome of the Rock , the Sancfriary Sheikh , Custodian of the Aqsa Mosque, the two Muezzins (callers for prayers), the Imam, the preacher and the timer of prayers.

The Study has also shown the funds allocated to thesejobs which are defrayed from these mosques endowments .

The Second type relates to Religious Courts and those jobs attached to them such as court scribes clerks, those who issue the religious edicts (muftis ), and the chief d!gnitanes of the city.

The s^dy has shown the wide - ranges authority and influence of judges in this period.

Judges exercised Jurisdiction over such civil affairs as marriage, divorce , alimony, dowers, inheritance, wills, administration of orphans funds, administration of religious endowments funds, appointment of Imams, preachers, teachers,Supervision of weights and measures.

Reference has also been made to those in charge of endowments as well as those superintending these endowments, Sheikhs of prayer rooms and heads of religious mystic orders spread all over Jerusalem .
