Abstract EN

The continuous development related to the actual access methods to electronic information resources and its services available at publishers of e content, led to enhance the desire of major information institutions to support the seamless application of linking to different types of information and services.

This study reviews the principal concepts of openURL, the major stages of the emergence and the technical development of electronic linking, until the advent of OpenURL which was accepted by the National Information Standards Organisation.

The study focus also on its general structure, the mechanism of action, and the practical applications applied within the different types of information institutions especially those that meet the needs of users in the academic environment.
