دور الخلافة العباسية في تقوية النشاط التجاري مع القارة الهندية و تطويره يأتي بناء بغداد و تحول مركز الخلافة إلى العراق في مقدمة الجهود التي بذلها العباسيون لإنعاش التجارة مع بلاد الشرق، ذلك أن العامل التجاري كان مستهدفا بين عوامل أخرى، فموقع العراق وسط العالم القديم بين بلاد الترك و الهند و الصين شرقا، و بلاد الشام و الحجاز و الروم (أوربا) غربا، و وجود نهري دجلة و الفرات و صلاحيتهما للملاحة، عاملان عززا نشاط العراق التجاري فقد كانت التجارات تأتي بغداد من البلدان، و هي كما وصفها اليعقوبي : "مشرعة الدنيا" و قد أتفق المؤرخون و الجغرافيون المسلمون على أهمية العامل التجاري في بناء بغداد، و جاء تخطيط بغداد ليؤكد هذه الحقيقة فقد كان نصيب الأسواق و تنظيمها و تخصيص محلات مناسبة لها كبيرا حتى صار كل طاق من طاقاتها الأربع سوقا في أول الأمر.
و أدرك العباسيون أن التجارة لا يكون لها أثرها إن لم تنشط على الصعيد الخارجي و لما كان الطريق البري غير آمن و مركز احتكاك عسكري، فقد ركز العباسيون جل اهتمامهم على الطريق البحري مما أدى إلى إزدها التجارة البحرية.
