Abstract EN

An experiment was conducted during the winter season of2003-2004 in Agricultural field at Abu Al-Khassib District; Basrah Govemerate.The objective of the experiment was to study the effect of sowing date on growth behavior and the yield of four pea cultivars (Piston sativum L.).

Experiments included 12 treatment combinations resulting from the interaction between three dates of sowing (1/10, 15/10 and 1/11) and four pea cultivars (Little Marvel, Lincoln Green Feast, Progress No(9) and Onward).

Applicable (Split- Plot Design) was used with four replicates.

Duncan's Multiple Range Test was used at probability of 0.05 to compare mean variations .

The results can be summarized as follows:- The first sowing date(l/10) gave a significant increase in pi tot height, fresh and dry weight of vegetative growth as well as total yield/plant and total production/donum .

The second sowing date (15/10) gave a significant increase in pods number/plant .

The third sowing date (1/11) caused a significant decrease in number of nodes before the first inflorescence and total flower/plant .

Leaf number, branch number/plant, appearance of first inflorescence and flower number/inflorescence were not significantly influenced b y sowing date .

CV.Lincoln Green Feast gave a significant increase in total leaf number/plant, flower number/inflorescence , total flower/plant and pod number/plant .

Whereas cv.

Progress No(9) gave a significant increase in the fresh weight of vegetative growth and Onward cultivar gave a significant increase in branch number/plant and dry weight of vegetative growth .

Little Marvel cv gave a significant reduction in the period for the first inflorescence appearance , node number before the first inflorescence appearance as well as gave a significant increase in total yield/plant and production/donum .

Plant height not influenced by this factor.

Interaction between sowing date and cultivars gave a significant effect in all vegetative growth , flowering and yield parameters except plant
