A field survey was conductcd during 1997/98 and 1998/99 growing seasons to determine the incidence of virus diseases affecting cultivated forage legume crops in Syria.

One thousand seven hundred and seventy eight plant samples with symptoms suggestive of virus infection were collected from 111 fields, and tested for the presence of viruses using tissuc-blot immunoassay (TBIA).

It was found that virus diseases incidence in most fields ranged between 1 -10 % in the first season and 1-20 % in the second season.

Results from serological tests showed that there was a number of viruses naturally infecting these forage legumes.

In the first season, Lutcoviruses le.g.

Bean leaf roll virus (BLRV), Beet western yellows virus (BWYV), Soybean dwarf virus (SbDV)] and Alfalfa mosaic virus (AIMV) were the most commonly encountered, especially in alfalfa and vetch fields.

While in the second season, Pea enation mosaic virus (PEMV) was most commonly encountered virus in the forage legumes fields, with the exception of chickling fields, and AIMV in alfalfa and clover fields.

The results showed increased virus incidence in the second season 1998/99.
