Abstract EN

Closed head injury (HI) is a stressful condition associated with multiple pathophysiological and biochemical changes that disturb patient’s homeostasis.

Isolated closed head injury (HI)patients (n = 33) were studied in comparison with non-head injured trauma (NHI) patients, (n = 10) and normal individual (n = 10) as two control groups.

Serial measurements of blood glucose, serum cortisol, 24 hours urinary epinephrine and nor-epinephrine as well as serum electrolytes, Plasma and urinary osmolality were all studied among different groups of Patients in an attempt to shed light on some factors that are responsible for glucose, water and electrolyte changes as well as its impact on the clinical °utcome of patients in this study.

Hyperglycemia with underlying hyperadrenergic state was more Prevalent in (HI) compared to (NHI) patients and normal control group.

P°rty five percent (45 %) of (HI) patients experienced electrolyte disturbance, hyponatremia being more pronounced than hypernatremia.

A Sl8nificant positive correlation between admission hyperglycemia in (HI).
