A method of anesthesia for bronchoscopic removal of inhaled foreign bodies in children

The bearing of a foreign body in the tracheo-bronchial tree produces unique challenges in airway management.

General anaesthesia is almost always necessary in rigid bronchoscopy, which is the procedure of choice.

This study endeavor best anaesthetic management for this situation.

Sixty children with inhaled endobronchial foreign bodies were assigned into group 1 which is the conventional method of anaesthesia using thiopentone, non-depolarising muscle relaxant, and group 2 who underwent FB removal under this method.

Results of this study showed that oxygen saturation and heart rate remained within normal range in all the cases ingroup2, while there were significant intraoperative changes (P < 0.01) in heart rate and spo2 in the standard method.

The procedure was safe as no postoperative morbidity or mortality was recorded.
