English Abstract

A structural study achieved to Nahr Structure Southern Iraq.

The study used well, geophysical data and drawing structure contour and Isopach maps to use it as chief tools in geometric and kinetic analysis to determine the structural picture of Nahr Umr Structure.

Geometric analysis of the faults classified the faults according to its pattern in map view, Fault patterns related to Salt Structure and the faults on the top of dome.

These classifications confirmed that the faults of Nahr Umr Structure are radial, parallel, conjugate, Compound offset and normal faults.

These faults which are formed graben and horst structures.

Geometric analysis of the fold of Nahr Umr Structure used geometric elements to classify it basing on fold facing, fold orientation(Based on Axial Surface, plunge of Hinge Line, and Symmetry of fold), fold shape in profile plane (Based on Interlimb Angle and Change in thickness), fold dimensions, and fold curvature analysis.

The fold classifications proved that Nahr Umr Structure is dome and anticline, gentle, upright and Supratenuous Fold.

Isopach maps showed the difference in thickness between the crest and limbs.

Whereas the thickness of crest is less than the limb and this attribute to the growth of Salt structure (Hormuz Salt) below Nahr Umr Structure.

The values of dips of the study area are decreased towards the recent formations because the effect of Salt structure on the earlier formations of study area was bigger than the effect on the later formations.

Kinetic analysis referred to that the type of faults and fold of Nahr Umr structure similar to the types which are associated with Salt structure activity.

This is equivalent with the results of geophysical interpretations which are referred to the presence of Salt Structure beneath Nahr Umr Structure.

The Basement rocks movements and the mechanisms of Salt structure (Density inversion, Differential loading, and Gravity spreading) might have played together the main role in Nahr Umr Structure Formation.
