Khalil Al-Khoury published his novel «Way.

Idhan Lastu Bi If - ranji*.

before most of the pioneering Arab novels written in the XIX* century.

Perhaps the issues of the Arab Renaissance, and in particular the issue of identity consciousness’, were on Khalil Al-Khoury’s mind during that period of time.

His novel discusses the themes of the growth of the modern city' and urbanization, the social transformations of the middle class and their existential connections with the art of narration.

This art form expressed the diversity of life styles through a variety of voices and visions based on verbal, social, ideological and historical diversity.

We note the introduction of Al-Khoury’s popular rather than elitist narrative style that employed a language between the two levels so it could remain realistic.

The work of Al-Khoury comes from a cultural style that acceptes the 'Other’, through the awareness of the distinction of identities and the assets of every culture, highlighting the dimensions of the cultural interchange, while still showing the clash between purity and hybridiry.
