English Abstract

The effect of oral administration of ethanolic extract of the whole plant of Artemisia judaica on hematological and biochemical parameters were investigated in male albino rats.

This study was intended to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan induced paw edema.

Rats were divided into two groups, control group and treated group.

The treated rats were orally given 270 mg/kg body weight of ethanolic extract of A.

judaica for 4 weeks.

For anti-inflammatory activity test, both groups were injected with 0.1 ml of 1% lambda carrageenan in saline , and the degree of paw edema was assessed.

The results of the present study showed a non significant (P>0.05) change in RBCs count, hematocrit, serum levels of cholesterol, aspartate aminotranferase (ASAT), alkaline phosphotase (ALP), creatine kinase (CK) and uric acid.

Other parameters including glucose, triglyceride and urea were significantly (P<0.05) decreased as compared to control rats.

However, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) levels were significantly increased (P<0.05).

The present results showed that total WBCs count and hemoglobin percentage were significantly (P<0.05) increased as compared to control rats.

On the other hand the ethanolic extract of A.

judaica showed inhibition on carrageenan induced rat paw edema, the thickness was significantly (P<0.05) increased as compared to control paw (saline).

It is concluded that chronic treatment with ethanolic extract of A.

judaica induces significant changes in some hematological and biochemical parameters of the rat blood.

In addition the ethanolic extract of A.

judaica showed significantly anti-inflammatory activity in the rat skin.
