Abstract EN

This study aimed at investigating the articulator)' and acoustic characteristics of the fricatives in Arabic.

As for the articulatory characteristics the study described them according to their category and production.

As for the acoustic characteristics of fricatives their time of vibration, frequency, energy.and pressure were measured by the computer speech lab (CSL) across some chosen phonetic contexts.

The study arrived at the following conclusions:: 1.

There is a correlation between the degree of the voiceless fricatives in Arabic and their being voiceless.

2.

There is a correlation between voicelessness and frequency.

3.

The energy of fricatives in Arabic is generally high.

4.

The pressure of fricatives in Arabic is medium.

5.

There is a correlation between the phonetic context of the fricatives in Arabic and their degree in vibration, energy, and pressure.
