Previous studies have shown that sex hormones can directly influence disease resistance or susceptibility, and key immunological factors such as cytokines or NO can be differentially modulated as a result of gender or pregnancy.

Our previous study demonstrated prevention role of hCG on in vitro leishmania infected-human macrophages.

In this study, we examined the effect of the treatment with hCG on the in vitro L.

tropica infected-human macrophages by studying, NO, IL-12(p40), IL-6 and IL-10 production.

This study demonstrated that hCG significantly increased the NO production by L.

tropica infected IFNγ-primed macrophages, which was correlated with decreasing in the number of infected macrophages as well as the number of amastigotes per macrophage, in a dose dependent manner.

This hormone has also an immunomodulatory effect on macrophages by increasing IL-6 and IL-12(p40) secretion.

However, the greatest increase in macrophage phagocytic activity and in NO, IL-6 and IL-12(p40) production was shown with the 500 U/ml concentration.

In conclusion, hCG can induce anti-leishmanial activity of infected human macrophages, through NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines production.
