Abstract EN

This study investigates the pragmatic constraints on the acceptability of grammatical structure, attempting to define the concept of “acceptabiHty”; and infer the pragmatic criteria on which the grammarians depended to decide the acceptability of a structure.

This study examined the analytical approach they used with grammatical structures, and to judge whether they are acceptable or unacceptable.

It was found that they surpassed mere linguistic meaning to a situation with the interrelationships among speakers involved, and related conditions that make structure acceptable in a situation but not in another; i.e.

appropriateness of a grammatical structure is disciplined by pragmatic criteria
