Abstract EN

Fluvial channel sandbodies are the main reservoir in the Cooper basin.

These sandbodies belong to several formations such as the Late Permian Toolachee Formation.

Five sandstone bodies (SS-1 to SS-5) have been identified within the Toolachee Formation and they have been interpreted to be deposited by high-sinuous channels.

The morphometric parameters of these channels such as channel width, depth, meander-belt width, and meander wavelength have been estimated.

In this study, these quantitative data are used to estimate the bankfull discharge of these channels by using several empirical equations developed on modern rivers by previous workers.

Bankfull discharge is one of the major controlling factor that governs the size and shape of a river channel and it is highly affected by the climate condition and the tectonic activity on fluvial systems.

Determining the bankfull discharge can yield valuable results that can aid to the interpretation of the controlling factors and hence reconstruction of fluvial systems.

This study is among the early attempt to determine the bankfull discharge by using subsurface boreholes data such as wireline logs.

The estimated bankfull discharge (Qb) of the sandbodies (SS-1 to SS-5) ranges from 40 to 280 m3/s which are relatively small values.

This could indicate that the rivers that were responsible for depositing these sandbodies are relatively small.

This may be because the climate condition during the Late Permian (Toolachee Formation) was a cold temperate condition which are generally characterized by low precipitation and thus low stream flows.
