Abstract EN
Sultan Qaboos University libraries seek to derive maximum benefit from knowledge management in order to achieve efficiency and strengthen their activities through employees who have -as knowledge workers- gone beyond the traditional routine work of the acquisition of books to activities related to the best use of the implicit and explicit knowledge in order to achieve the optimum level of information services provision.
The perspectives of knowledge management in this study are based on the view that there are overlapping and complementary components which work together: that available knowledge workers are committed to interacting with the knowledge possessed by these libraries through practices that include knowledge creation, organization, sharing, and application.
Those knowledge workers own the knowledge and manage it, relying on information technology as an effective tool for knowledge management, thereby demonstrating supportive leadership for the application of these processes.
Against this background, the study aims to measure and assess the level of application of knowledge management processes at the Sultan Qaboos University libraries and identify indicators of the extent of available knowledge workers in relation to effective implementation of these processes.
The study is descriptive in nature.
A questionnaire was used as a tool to collect data from 43 staff at the central library.
The most important results are as follows: there is an average of “agree” in terms of application of knowledge management processes, with a score of (3.96%) on a five-point Likert scale, indicating that a high proportion of knowledge workers in this library, and managers, see themselves as supporters of the application of knowledge management processes.
The results also demonstrate an average level of correlation between the role of the library staff as knowledge workers and their application of knowledge management processes and improvement in the delivery of information services in terms of knowledge creation, and high correlation with the sharing of knowledge and its application.
The study recommends providing staff with training courses and workshops on the importance of their role as knowledge workers in improving knowledge management activities in the library;.
It also indicates the need for greater effectiveness in knowledge storage, organization and retrieval.
The study recommends encouraging employees to report their needs to develop their skills in knowledge management as a step to optimizing their performance as knowledge workers.
