The study aimed at measuring the level of critical reading skills among tenth grade students, and determining the relationship between their competency level, their gender, and level of achievement in Arabic language.
The sample of the study consisted of (280) male and female students.
The instruments used included: a list of critical reading skills with a total of (24) items distributed among three dimensions (Discrimination, Conclusion, and Evaluation); and a competency test for measuring students critical reading skills.
The results of the study revealed that there is a clear weakness among tenth graders in their level of critical reading skills with an average mean of (48.60%).
The results also showed that there is a significant difference between the mean scores of students' critical reading skills due to gender, in favor of females.
In addition, there is a significant difference between the students' mean scores in the critical reading skills test due the students' level of achievement in Arabic language in favor of the high achievers.
In light of these findings, a number of recommendations were suggested for improving the instructional process in general, and the students' competencies in critical reading, in particular.
