Abstract EN

The author looks into the role played by Palestinian intellectuals/poets in the 1948 territory in constructing a Palestinian narrative of the Nakba, and explores key themes around which this narrative and its constituent symbols revolve.

The paper pays attention to the contradictory relationship between intellectuals’ discourse of liberation, emancipation and change and the social structure from which they advocate breaking away.

The research paper comprises three sections.

Giving an overview of the 1948 events, section 1 explores the emergence of the concept of Nakba, its derivative meaning, and its influence on the national self.

Section 2 investigates the key metaphors, terms and concepts invested by poets to construct a Palestinian narrative of the 1948 events.

Finally, section 3 uncovers the relationship between gender and nationalism through poetry of the Nakba, assessing the impact of the Nakba in reproducing the values regulating patriarchal culture.
