The citation in the ancient Arabic dictionaries is considered as a literary and cultural reference and forms the basic material in the structure of the lexical text.

The citation concept became fixed from the dictionary foundation process by al-Khalil Ibn Ahmed al-l;arahidi in his dictionary al-‘Ayn, and then developed with Ibn al-Qalis al- Barc‘ fi-l-Lugha and Ibn Essayidas al-muhakkam dictionaries, and then knew' a great development in Ibn Mandor’s Lissan al-‘Arab.

Ihis research aims at making a survey on the totality of the linguistic citations contained in the ancient dictionaries taken from the Holy Coran and from the Arabic poetry and literary texts, proverbs and anccdotcs.

What distinguishes the citation in the ancient Arabic dictionaries is the fact that it is followed by its author, and its clear revelation of the adoption of a linguistic code to be rcfcrcnccd to.

Thus, it is considered as the optimal model that seeks to clarify language use in society whether was it related to the terms use in its literally or figurative sense.

It also highlights the context of its use and the defining forms of its syntactic formation.

This study relics on applied models to reach theoretical conclusions on the citations nature, its importance and the necessity of its presence in the Arabic dictionary.

La citation dans les ancicns dictionnaires arabes est considerte commc unc rcfcrencc litttraire ct culturcllc ct constituc de ce fait la matiere principalc dans la structure du texte lexical.

Le concept de citation a ctc ctabli dcpuis le processus d’tlaboration dc dictionnairc par al-Khalil Ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi dans son dictionnaire al-‘Ayn, puis a etc clarific dans les dictionnaires al-Bare‘ fi-l-Lugha dc Ibn El Qalis, al-Muhakkam d'lbn Essayida et Lissan al-Arab dc Ibn xMandour.

Le but dc ccttc rcchcrchc est d’cffectuer unc cnquctc sur l'cnscmblc des citations linguistiqucs contcnucs dans les anciens dictionnaircs tires du Coran ct dc la poesie arabc, des tcxtcs litteraires, des proverbes et des anccdotcs.

La citation dans les ancicns dictionnaires arabes est distinguec par lc fait qu cllc est suivie par l’auteur.

En plus, cllc rtvcle clairemcnr 1'adoption d un code linguistique auquel on se rcfcrc.

Ainsi, elle est consider^ comme ctant lc modele optimal qui pcrmct dc clarificr ('utilisation de la langue dans la socicte.

La citation met egalement en exergue le contcxte dc son utilisation et les formes dtfinissant sa formation syntaxique.

Ccttc etude s'appuie sur des modclcs appliques pour arriver £ des conclusions thcoriqucs sur la nature de la citation, son importance et la necessite de sa presence dans le dictionnaire arabe.
