The most important step in improving any bank sector is understanding its structure and the factors contributing in its returns and that was what this study did through applying market power hypothesis in the methodology of comparing Islamic and traditional banks in the GCC banks market.
The study sample included 95% of banks in the GCC banks market from UAE, kingdom of Bahrain, Kuwait and KSA through 6 years.
Market power hypothesis included structure-conduct-performance hypothesis and traditional efficiency hypothesis .these hypotheses were tested using linear regression as return on assets (ROA) were tested as an indicator of profitability and it also tested concentration and market share.
The results showed that in some countries, Islamic banks are concentrated whereas the advanced analysis of the relation between concentration and performance showed that traditional banks are the ones who benefit from its concentration in achieving high returns.
In general Islamic banks did not use concentration in the market to impose non-competitive prices.
The concentration of Islamic banks may be explained by the newness of it comparing with traditional banks or its early entrance to the market which make it acquire high market share as it attract certain category of investors and creditors.
Based on these results, the study recommended that banks market organisers In GCC to put laws and legistlations that decrease the effect of market power on concentration, contribute to the financial liberalization, support competitiveness in banks sector, maintain the existing balance in banks market, prevent monopoly and concentration and it would encourage banks to increase their efficiency.
