Abstract EN

The paper raises controversial issues concerning the challenges facing Saudi higher education to meet the needs of the labour market.

The study aims to examine the challenges in meeting the market demands especially from graduates of applied sciences and information technology disciplines.

The paper is based on situation analysis of 14 published and unpublished studies and analysis of statistical records.

The main results have found that weak partnership between the academic and the economic sectors; the university curricula still are traditional, deficient in upgrading the applied skills of students; deficient of the academic counseling in guiding students to the right and suitable specialization; unspecific strategy to close the labour market gap.

The study recommends that higher education must increase the enrolments to information technology colleges; the labour market must open venues and training opportunities for graduates in the social sciences so as to minimize the rate of unemployment.
