Abstract EN

The research studies the characters in Saud ALsanosi`s novel, The Bamboo Stalk, from a semiotic perspective.

It starts with a conceptual introduction, and then gives a descriptive account of the novel, a character analysis, form factor, and the semiotic square.

The novel has several characters varying in intensity and weakness, richness and poverty, Islam and disbelief.

It includes Arabs and non-Arabs, women and men, unjust and oppressed people, revolutionaries and enslaved, yet the hero is Jesus or Jose, son of the Kuwaiti Ibn Rashed and the son of Philippine Jozafin.

He is trying to get to the Kuwaiti society to fulfill his father’s will, and for the continuity of the Tarov family.

He attempts to get away from life of poverty and hunger in the Philippines and to get his financial and social rights in Kwait, but he failed.

He is not able to achieve what he desires; he is too weak to face the society.
