Abstract EN

The study aims at identifying the degree of academic freedom of teaching staff in Al-Balqa’ Applied University from their perspective.

The researcher has prepared a questionnaire that consists of (33) items distributed on four areas: freedom of expression, freedom of teaching, freedom to participate in academic decision-making, and freedom of scientific research according to Likert scale.

The researcher uses the descriptive analysis approach in order to identify the degree of academic freedom of teaching staff in Al-Balqa’ Applied University in Jordan.

The study is conducted on all teaching staff in the colleges of Al-Balqa’ Applied University in the central region who hold master degree and above during the academic year 2015/2016.

The population of the study consists of )608) teaching staff (192) are females.

Two hundred (200) of the questionnaires are distributed and the numbers of return of the questionnaire are (169) valid for statistical analysis.

The study concludes that the degree of teaching staff of academic freedom was high in favor of freedom of expression and moderately in the areas of: freedom to participate in academic decision-making, freedom of scientific research, and freedom of teaching in consecutively.

Also, there is a presence of statistically significant differences at the level of (α ≤ 0.05) in the degree of the teaching staff at the University of Balqa Applied of academic freedom in favor of sex variable.

While the areas of freedom of teaching and freedom to participate in academic decision-making are in favor of males.

Whereas the teaching experience variable is in favor of(10-15) years of experience in the area of freedom of teaching while for the academic rank is in favor of professor in the freedom of scientific research area.

In light of the study results, the researcher recommends a number of recommendations.
