English Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between school violence and social skills among students in secondary governmental schools in Ramallah and Al-Bireh cities, depending on four variables: gender, academic achievement, academic specialization, and place of residence.

To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher used the scales of aggressive behavior scale prepared by Baza (2003) and Shqair (2005), and the social skills scale prepared by Ronald Rejo (1989), which was translated into Arabic by Khalifa (2006).

The researcher has adapted and developed these two scales to match the main objectives of this study through making some changes to several paragraphs.

The sample of the study consisted of (377) students, both males and females, out of a larger study population of (2194) students.

Thus, the study sample constituted (17.2%) of the original social groupings.

The members of this sample were enrolled in the second semester of the academic year 2016- 17 in six of the governmental secondary schools (out of 10) located in Ramallah and Al-Bireh cities.

The study sample was chosen by random cluster method, and the study depends on the descriptive associative approach.

The results of this study showed that the overall level of response of secondary students in the above-mentioned cities on the scale of aggressive behavior was relatively low, with an average of (2.32), while the score of the same students on the scale of social skills was moderate, with an average of (3.47).

The results also show statistically significant differences (higher) on the scale of school violence attributed to gender variable in favor of males.

In addition, there were statistically significant differences on the scale of school violence attributable to the academic achievement variable of accumulative grade point average below (60%), for both males and females.

Moreover, there were statistically significant differences on the scale of school violence attributable to the “art” specialization variable, specifically in the areas of physical and verbal violence; there was no statistically significant difference for the category of hostility.

In addition, there were no statistically significant differences on the scale of school violence attributable to the place of residence variable (city, village or camp) in the fields of physical and verbal aggression; there were, however, statistically significant differences in the category of “hostility” for the camp inhabitants.

Moreover, there were statistically significant differences existed on the scale of social skills attributable to gender variable in favor of males in the area of social sensitivity.

Furthermore, on the scale of social skills, no statistically significant differences were noted according to the gender variable for the categories of social expression and social control.

Moreover, there were no statistically significant differences on the scale of social skills attributable to the variables of academic achievement, specialization, or place of residence.

Finally, no correlation was found between the scales of school violence and social skills among students in secondary governmental schools in the two cities.
