Nuclear Forensics and Nuclear Attribution are increasingly important tools in the fight against illicit trafficking in nuclear and radiological materials.

It aims to identify the source of nuclear and radiological materials used in illicit activities and to identify the point of origin and transit routes of such materials, ultimately contributing to the prosecution of those responsible.

Many inputs are used, including the results of nuclear forensic analysis of samples, understanding of radiochemical effects, understanding of environmental impacts, knowledge of production methods of special nuclear materials (SNM), knowledge of nuclear weapons development pathways, information from intelligence sources, and information issued by law enforcement agencies.

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the tools and procedures of nuclear forensics and nuclear attribution and their guidance to respond to events involving the interception of nuclear and radiological materials.
