Short term deprivation of liberty punishment is one of the most important criminal punishments in criminal punishment system especially since it appeared at the end of the eighteenth century; it replaced the physical punishment which was more of revenge than punishment.

Besides, expansion in applying such punishments revealed their failure in fulfilling the purpose of the punishment that the contemporary punishment policy aims for.

In addition, it has many downsides which differ according to individual, psychological, social, and even economical levels as it causes loss to the state more than solving the crime problem.

This leads law scholars to think of substitution solutions called Short term deprivation of liberty punishment substitutes.
