Abstract EN

The aim of the study was to examine the concept of costume and the national identity in the Arab literature heritage to the end of fourth Hijri century, using a semiotic approach as one of the nonverbal, unique, inspiring and affecting features in the relations between nations.

The study relied on several resources and references relating the importance of costume as a feature and one of the important aspects in Al Jahiz’s book Al Bayan Wa Al Tabeeyn.

The study indicated that Arabs had early awareness of the costume significance as one of the nonverbal features in human history since its beginning, their deep understanding to their costume uniqueness compared to other nations costumes, as they paid special consideration for costume as Al Jahiz indicated and detailed
