The study aimed at assessing the elementary teachers' (male/female) opinions regarding their needs of the specialized educational competences in gifted education, and the importance of such competences to them.

The study was conducted in Makkah and Jeddah elementary schools.

The Study sample consisted of (419) teachers: (158) males and (261) females.

It used a pre-prepared questionnaire by Maajeeny (1998) that consisted of two sub-scales: one to assess the importance of the competences, while the other to assess the need for additional training.

The questionnaire contained (34) specialized competences which reflect fife dimensions: Planning Special Programs, General conceptions, Assessment, Special Programs, and Characteristics and skills of the teacher.

The main results of the study were: 1- Competences regarding teacher's characteristics were the most pervasive in importance, followed by those related to special programs and their planning, then those for assessment, and finally those for general conceptions.

However, competences related to special programs and its planning ranked first with regard to the need for training, followed by those for assessment, then those for teacher's characteristics and skills, and finally those related to general conceptions.

2- There were no statistical differences in the opinions of teachers regarding the importance or the need of the competences according to the teachers' gender (male/female).

The study recommended offering in-service training for teachers in the general aspects of gifted education.
