The Maghreb region was an important arena for the competition between the major European powers during the period of the First and Second World Wars.

The European countries exercised colonial policies on the peoples of the region.

This led some countries of the Maghreb to turn their backs on these policies and towards the United States of America.

In the 1970s, European countries were able to develop their policies towards the Maghreb, relying on a new approach to managing these policies, The transformation of European policies towards the Maghreb region, which was clearly demonstrated at the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership Conference in Barcelona in 1995, marked the beginning of the return of a new European intervention in the region, based on the policy of economic and security cooperation (in the European sense) European policy objectives in the region.

This new approach has also been a practical application of the European strategies aimed at increasing the level of its intervention in the regions adjacent to the European continent.
