Abstract EN

In general, the phenomenon of single motherhood has elicited tremendous interest, largely due to the negative impact on the mother, the children and the society alike.

Therefore, this study aims to present the growth of the phenomenon of single mothers in Ouargla Province, as an example of other Algerian provinces.

It utilized data compiled mainly from hospital records and from Directorate of Community activities at Ouargla.

It is found that Algerian laws take into account the single mothers and illegitimate children to preserve their rights, inherent dignity and their health requirement.

The number of single mothers in the province of Ouargla has reached 358 during the period (2000- 2014), 34 % of them were native of Ouargla and about 67 % came from other provinces.

The average age of single mothers native of Ouargla is about 26 years old.

Most of them with low level of education.

The majority of the single mothers were never married (70 %) as against 30 % divorced.

Despite the trend of increasing numbers of single mothers in Ouargla province, it is much lower than the rates in other provinces.

Finally, it is recommended to : 1.

Increase the care given to single mothers and to provide them with their basic needs ; 2.

Broaden adolescent and youth awareness campaign on the negative consequences of sexual promiscuity.

Encourage young people to marry by reducing the dowries.

4.

Strengthen sex and reproductive health education among the youth.
