Abstract EN

The study examines the effect of some sociocultural variables on obesity particularly the Body mass Index (BMI) among elderly in Kuwait society.

A total of 268 old adults were selected, 60 years and above (m = 67.11 ; sd = 4.33).

Sociocultural and physical variables were included in the questionnaire which is the major tool of this study.

Sociocultural variables include four parts: demographic, Physical Activity measurement, Social Support Scale, and nutrition behavior variables.

Six anthropometric measurements were taken on every individual: height, weight, triceps skinfold, subscapular skinfold, hip circumference, and waist circumference.

BMI was calculated.

All of the measurements followed the regular procedures.

SPSS was used for data entry and analysis.

Descriptive and inferential statistic analysis were used for this study.

Data show high incidence of obesity among Kuwaiti elderly in both sex.

Data show that there is a significant differences between men and women in obesity variables and skinfold thickness.

Significant relationship was found between BMI and some sociocultural variables such as: socioeconomic status, physical activity, family size and some variables related to nutrition variables.
