Abstract EN

This paper examines elision ofalif and retention of fathah in Quranic qira'at , which some scholars justified as poetic license.

Scholars believe that this issue is in the league of its own in comparison with the elisions of kasrah and dammah and retentions ofya ' and waw, respectively, which permeate Quranic qira'at and poetry as well.

In so doing, this paper explores and traces the concept of elision in linguistics along with the scholars' views and attitudes towards it.

Moreover, it tackles some aspects of eliding alif and retaining fathah in Quranic qira'at .

Finally, this paper examineswhether this issue is relevant to the discrepancy between orthography and the pronunciation of those terms.
