Abstract EN

This study aimed at exploring the differences in parentification between adolescents of divorced and non-divorced parents, and the differences between the parentified and the non-parentified adolescents in relation to a number of psychological symptoms, and to investigate the predictability of a number of demographic variables in the development of parentification.

The sample consisted of 200 adolescents selected from the South Triangle area in Palestine.

To achieve the study objectives, an adapted form of Parentification Questionnaire - PQ (Sessions and Jurkovic, 1986) and the Brief Symptom Inventory - BSI (Leonard R.

Derogatis, 1992) were adopted.

Results of (t-test) revealed significant differences in parentification levels between the adolescents of divorced and non-divorced parents; the mean of the scores on the PQ of the former group was significantly higher than that of the latter.

Significant differences were also found between the parentified group and the nonparentifird group in the different dimensions of the BSI.

Logistic regression revealed that the economic status and the academic level of the parents and the adolescent’s age explained 34.9% of the variance in the distribution of the parentification variable.

Whereas, the value of the explained variance in parentification in relation to the adolescence’ gender or birth order were not significant.
