Abstract EN

This study aims to explicate the major representations of metafictional structure in the novel Tarateel AL'adam (Hymns of Nonexistence)written by the Syrian author Maha Hassan.

The novel establishes a creatively different and modernist text that goes beyond itself through the use of aesthetic experimentation implemented within itself.

This kind of experimentation is valuable due to its nature and admirableness;it enables the text to respond to the artistic necessities that parallel reality.

The study uses the descriptive analytical approach to address the technicalities of metafiction in Tarateel AL'adam (Hymns of Nonexistence).

It seeks to expose the novel as a compact fictional product that establishes an internal dialogue with itself from within itself, utilizing an acute critical awareness that is intentional, deliberate and thoughtfully calculated; the novel's metafictionality, thus, aims to dismiss the illusion of narratives by exposing the mechanisms of creative writing and how imaginative worlds are constructed.

The study focuses on the major techniques of this illusive genre with regard to the three poles of the narrating process : the narrator, the audience (both critics and readers) and the text.

Techniques are discussed with reference to the different perspectives the text exhibits, the diverse levels of narration, the multiple and conflicting narrators, the fragmentation and a chronological use of time and the shattering of plot coherence.

The discussion highlights the disintegration of the build of the narrative by repeated penetrations to its structure through commentaries, referrals, repetitions, interventions and the transferal of the function of nouns and their referents from one lingual register to another utilizing myth, dreams and imagination.
