Abstract EN
Visual culture and art criticism are considered among the basics of contemporary art education.
Art curricula are scarcely devoid of objectives that seek to increase the capacity of visual culture and develop students’ strategies and scientific approaches that proved to be valid and useful in the field of teaching visual arts in general and plastic arts in particular.
Given the importance of visual culture and art criticism in the art curriculum, they have become a crucial component and came to be regarded as standards for evaluating the effectiveness and modernity in the processes of teaching and learning.
They are considered among the most important contemporary curriculum standards in the field of plastic arts where the importance of using history and culture in teaching the discipline is emphasized.
Achievement levels have been identified to measure the attainment of these standards in the contents of plastic arts curricula.
The present study aims at assessing plastic arts curricula in the Sultanate of Oman in the light of visual culture concepts and art criticism skills from the point of view of plastic arts teachers who work in the Ministry of Education.
To achieve the aims of the study, a sample of 88 teachers was randomly selected and the researchers have adopted the descriptive analytical research method using a valid and reliable questionnaire.
The findings of this study show that the general objectives of plastic art curricula contributed very little in supporting students’ acquisition of visual culture and art criticism skills.
The results also show that the curricula’s contents of teaching units in grades 4 to 12 do not reflect the plastic arts curriculum standards that are linked to art history and multiculturalism and that aim at developing visual culture and art criticism skills.
This study ended with some recommendations which might enhance visual culture and art criticism in plastic arts curricula in Oman
