The judicial transformation in Egypt during the first era of the Mamluks (648-784h / 1250-1382m), was of particular interest to the Americ n Orient list Joseph Escovitz who presented comprehensive stud in his thesis entitled The office of q l-qu t in iro under the r l ml ks which tries to detect the c uses of the transformation of the Mamluk judicial institution from the Shafei justice system to a system that is based on the four schools; noting by that the role of the Shafei judge, Taj Din Ibn Bint al- A’ zz in th t tr nsform tion.

Escovitz criticized the Western historical sources and studies that saw judge Ibn Bint al- A’ zz to be the m in re son behind the decision of the mluk Sult n Baybars (658-676h / 1258-1277m) to alter the tendencies of the Mamluk judicial institution in 663 AH (1265 AD).

Moreover, he focused on discussing the impact of this shift on the authority of judge Ibn Bint al- A’ zz; nd the Sh fi'i sect in Eg pt.
